About Long Grove Country School THE WHOLE CHILD We consider the whole child when designing our classrooms and planning our activities. Howard Gardner from Harvard has determined there are different types of intelligence. In his book, Frames of Mind, he describes seven ways of being intelligent, and there are probably more.
LGCS teachers provide children experiences which use all these intelligences. Children learn through their personal strengths while developing all areas of intelligence. A Theme Approach Themes structure our curriculum. Children have enjoyed exciting themes as Digging Dinosaurs, Water Water Everywhere, Let Loose on Mother Goose, and many more! Lasting one to three weeks, themes integrate all subject areas. They help children make connections between concepts. And, they are lots of fun! Social Settings and Lesson Formats Children benefit from being in a variety of social settings during the day. They spend time in a large groups and time in small groups. Interest centers are also open for children's play and exploration--either independently or with friends. We work to see that every child feels a sense of group membership; we support children in having successful interactions. Literacy Development Literacy skills are tied into each day's events. Children do lots of talking and listening. They hear captivating stories. They have opportunities to retell stories and recite rhymes. They are provided with paper, pencils and encouragement to 'write'. The value of the printed word is demonstrated. These activities lay a foundation for a lifetime of reading and writing. |
